In May 2023 I again had the opportunity to attend the Michigan Historic Preservation Network‘s annual meeting, this time on Mackinac Island and based at the Mission Point Resort. It was my first trip to the island, and I was so impressed by the wonderful harmony of the natural and cultural, the balance between tourism and preservation, and the variety of architecture. As with the earlier MHPN conferences, I brought my 4×5 Wista field camera and some Ilford FP4 black and white film for some holiday snapshots in the form of HABS/HAER photography. With glorious weather throughout our time there, I had a chance to photograph several locations. The island is so rich in remarkable resources, however, I was able to only scratch the surface. Another visit is decidedly in the offing.
